Many
pastors avoid discussing the topic of Hell, leaving their parishioners
with many unanswered questions. Do they leave Satan out of their sermons
because he is less important than God? Or are people just generally
superstitious about investigations into Satan and the existence of Hell?
I suppose a person could claim that Satan's role within Christianity
isn't as important as the role of God, but God does have an adversary.
Truth
be told, the Bible makes many references to Hell and Satan. The Devil's
aggressive and antagonistic role within the world should not be
overlooked. Satan is a source of pain, suffering, and torment for
humankind. By not acknowledging the Devil's existence, we are granting
him full permission to control our lives and constantly tempt and
influence us.
If
a person believes in God and Heaven, then it is completely irrational
to not believe in Satan and Hell. Put simply, one cannot exist without
the other. If we recognize and accept that Satan and Hell exist, that
the Devil is real and Hell is a place where we could find ourselves in
the afterlife, then the task of fighting against this evil becomes much
less complicated.
In his book, The Hour of Our Death, Philippe
Ariès wrote that there is a “complete disappearance of hell. Even those
who believe in the Devil limit his power to this world and do not
believe in eternal damnation.” In today’s world, Satan and Hell (and
what they signify) seem to have become lost and meaningless to people.
Some
people, and even some churches, claim that Satan does not exist at all,
or that he himself is a propaganda tool created by the church to
frighten people into believing in God. Gerald Messadié expresses his
belief in his book, A History of the Devil. He writes “that it is
demonic to believe in the Devil, not the other way around, as the
Jesuits tried to teach [him] when they said that the Devil’s greatest
trick is to make one believe that he doesn’t exist.”
The
belief that Hell isn’t real, or that Satan has no power, must not be
allowed to continue. If Satan is allowed to convince us all that he
doesn’t exist, then he will be able to accomplish his task of creating
Hell on Earth. The Devil will then become the ruler of all things that
are tangible. He will make evil more powerful than good, and he will
then have accomplished his goal of overthrowing the Kingdom of God. We
absolutely cannot allow this to happen!
